ARCHITECTURE

For over 35 years, DJR has been rooted in the practice of architecture. One of our earliest large-scale projects was in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis, where we collaborated with the community to develop housing and urban design strategies aimed at promoting development in a traditionally Native American area. Over the years we have expanded our services to include historic preservation, commercial, hospitality, municipal, civic + cultural, modular design and more. While continuing to serve underserved communities through affordable housing and urban design strategies, the firm has also expanded its reach internationally, including projects in Djibouti, Africa.

Our impact on housing…

DJR has been a thought leader in housing for over 35 years. We believe housing is one of the most fundamental forms of architecture and urban design. Housing comprises much of the built environment. Where others see vacant lots, we see latent potential to provide well designed and attainable housing. We take great pride in serving our clients and the communities in which we work. In the last ten years alone, we have designed more projects in the Minneapolis / St. Paul metro area than any other design firm. All combined, these projects equate to an area of a small city. That is impact.

Housing has always been a very complex and controversial discipline. To design an apartment building we must navigate between affordability and market rate, neighborhood and city requirements, zoning, building codes, community needs and desires, and determine how these constraints combine in terms of financing and return on investment. Add to these geographical variations, reflections of local culture and context, and unit mix percentages for market rate and affordable housing, and you’ve created a complexity that many firms simply cannot navigate.
