The Col

The Col is a 4-story affordable housing project located in Columbia Heights, Minnesota. Located near Central Avenue, a major thoroughfare of the neighborhood, The Col helps create the subtle transition from the bustling commercial district to the quieter single-family homes adjacent. The L-shape of the building maximizes the efficiency of the site, creating an ideal layout for units, while maintaining a strong street presence. The surface parking lot is tucked behind the building, in the inside corner of the site, with access to the underground parking garage. Residents can choose from a range of 1 to 3-bedroom units, each equipped with modern amenities like in-unit washer and dryer and dishwasher. 62 units are available for new residents to call home.

The interior design reflects a blend of simplicity and elegance, with clean lines, subtle warmth and pops of pattern play creating an inviting ambiance. Slate blue, creamy whites, and charcoals set up a sleek palette and touches of warm leather and wood give it a welcoming feeling. Simple materials keep the space clean, and patterns mixed in give it some personality.

The amenities in this residence are concentrated in a welcoming and active zone off the front entry. The lounge and kitchen can open up for free-flowing activity between the spaces or be closed off with glassy doors for private events. The interior amenities are rounded out with an energetic, plaid-painted fitness center. Residents can seamlessly transition from indoor to outdoor living, with direct access to playground and outdoor dining space, fostering a sense of community and connection. These interior features and programmatic adjacencies directly impact how residents can utilize the space to connect with each other.
